1. Book Doctoring, Editing & Proposal Development
I work with agents, publishers and writers to help turn around manuscripts that have gone rogue; edit books that could be tighter, livelier or more coherent; and develop and write compelling book proposals. If you have an idea for a nonfiction book, contact me and I can help you shape your project, strengthen your platform, write your proposal and sell your book.
“Katrin Schumann is a writer extraordinaire. She provided brilliant restructuring, captured my voice in a consistent and vibrant way, and brought my stories to even greater life with vivid detail and storytelling prowess.”
~ Ed Bacon, author 8 Habits of Love (Grand Central)
I am available on a limited basis for co-authoring or ghostwriting books for established professionals with promising marketing platforms. I also write books for organizations and individuals with excellent outreach opportunities who are publishing independently.
Katrin is the first writer/editor I recommend when an editor or agent asks me to recommend a developmental editor, proposal writer, or ghostwriter. She can do it all. She is brilliant, professional, a pleasure to work with and fast! It’s hard to fathom how she does what she does. As a literary agent, I fully relax when she’s on the job. I know she will deliver on time with wonderful results. I really can’t recommend her highly enough!

3. Consultations and Teaching
I do significant work with seasoned writers preparing their novels, memoirs or short stories for submission to agents or publishers, and I love working with novices helping them find their voice and story, and getting their work to the next level.
My goals are to be effective, efficient, and to represent excellent value for money. Before agreeing to an editing project, I ask for a 20 page submission upfront to make sure we’re a good match in terms of sensibilities and needs. I’m particularly intrigued by themes that explore the conflict between the individual and the environment, whether political or personal.
My edits are provided either electronically or on paper, with a follow up phone call. For a comprehensive edit, I will analyze the effectiveness of overarching elements such as structure, voice, character development, pace, and consistency, as well as technical aspects such as dialogue and scene placement. I also provide editorial letters, if requested. I do not offer copy editing.
Contact me for help with a query letter, pitch or tagline. I have worked with over a hundred writers to streamline their efforts, and it’s among my favorite activities.
“Katrin Schumann’s editorial services had a profound effect on the quality of my manuscript. Overall, the text is leaner, more economical; not a chubby sentence eluded her eye, but it was her structural suggestions that really whipped things into shape. Honing in deftly on the heart of my project, she coaxed some crucial pages out of me—without ever imposing her own writing style upon mine. She’s a consummate professional, and worth every penny.”
~ James Ferry, memoir writer
“When I began writing seriously, I took “Finding Your Voice” taught by Katrin at Grub Street. Katrin’s mentoring, encouragement and thoughtful criticism enabled me to develop my characters with clarity and realism. She brings a wealth of talent and experience to her teaching and understands the hard work of writing from the inside out.
